Mum Shirl time table


  • 1914 born on the Erambie Reserve,Cowra,of Wiradjuri descent.
  • 1930s moved with her family to Sydney.
  • 1930s visiting her brother in jail.
  • 1970 Shirl with her friends,were the guiding force behind a group of young Aboriginal man and women who were involved in Gurindgi campaign for land rights.
  • 1971 helped to establish the Aboriginal legal service.
  • 1972 helped to establish the Aboriginal Medical Service,the Aboriginal black Theatre,the Aboriginal tent Embassy,the Aboriginal Children's Service,The Aboriginal Housing Company and Detoxification Centre at Wisman's Ferry
  • 1990 she had reared over 60 children
  • 1998 died

  • His mother left him when hi was 8 and raised by his father

Achievement

Turning point


  •  his father died, Mandela and was groomed becoming chief of his local tribe
  •  at university Nelson Mandela became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African  Society.
  •  The majority of Black South Africans had little opportunities either Economic or Political
  •  along with his good friend and comrade Oliver Tambo was expelled from Fort Hare for  organising a student strike.
  •  Mandela had to resign from the ANC and work underground
  •  Mandela and several others were charged with treason
  •  the massacre and goverment banned led Mandela to advocate armed struggle through the  Umkhonto we  Sizwe (MK).
  •  Mandela had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island  prison
  •  Mandela lost his eldest son to this disease and Mandela has worked hard to campaign on this  issue

  •  Mandela finished his degree and qualified as a Lawyer.
  •  Mandela and Tambo opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa.
  •  Mandela helped found the ANC Youth League, whose Programme of Action was adopted by  the ANC in 1949
  •  Conducting their own defence they eventually proved to be victorious
  •  He was  helping  people in prison
  •  Although negotiations were painfully slow and difficult, they eventually led to Mandela’s  release 
  •  Elected State President of South Africa on and was President until June 1999
  •  One of the few politicians who have gone beyond a political role
  •  He is widely admired and has received many prestigious awards.
  •  Associated with many educational programmes and initiatives such as Make Poverty History  Campaign. 
  • Since retiring from office Nelson Mandela has continued to be an international figure of great statur
  • Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with F.W. De Klerk
